Marine Science | Course 121: Intro to Marine Biology Every new Sea Camper needs the opportunity to explore and discover our wonderful island environment. The course touches on ocean inhabitants like marine invertebrates, bony fish, sharks, and algae as well as habitats like the open ocean, the sea floor, and tidal pools. Marine biology is a great introduction to the marine world that will really allow you to more fully enjoy all of your water activities. Note: If you have attended Jr. Sea Camp or CIMI DO NOT sign up for this class; it is a repeat of a class that you have already taken. 1 Class Period. | | | | Course 122: Invertebrates and Ichthyology Most of the creatures you commonly see in the ocean are either invertebrates or fish! Learn more about what makes them interesting and unique. How does the presence or absence of an internal skeleton influence feeding strategies or survival strategies? How does it affect a creature's behavior in its watery environment? Sign up for this experience and find out. Explore our aquariums, touch tanks, tide pools - and more! 1 Class Period. | | Course 124: Ocean Exploration and Discovery This is an oceanography class that focuses on how the latest technologies can help us explore and understand the ocean. Each of the six classes will spotlight a different gadget to probe the deep. This is your chance to get some hands on time with gizmos such as hydrophones, sonar, depth sounders, ROVs and more. If you dream of being an ocean scientist or even just think the ocean is cool this is the introductory course for you! 1 Class Period | | | | Course 126: Aquarium Design and Maintenance Learn the basics of setting up and maintaining an aquarium. You'll get to enjoy all aspects of an aquarist's life from collecting to cleaning! It's probably not as easy as you think, but probably more fun! We encourage you to set up an environmentally responsible tank at home. In this class, you gain insight into all facets of an animal's life because its life support system becomes a part of your daily routine! (Although you will be collecting animals, this is not a rod and reel fishing class. Do not bring rods or tackle.) Prerequisite: Invertebrates and/or ichthyology will help 1 Class Period. | Course 126B Aquariums: Behind the Scenes Time to move beyond introductions and really get behind the scenes by assisting a CIMI aquarist in most aspects of the overall care and maintenance of the marine labs. Starting up where the introductory class ended, participants will gain a greater understanding and appreciation for the methods and efforts required to maintain dynamic educational exhibits and displays. Prerequisite: Must have previously taken Course 126 2 Class Periods. | | | | Course 127: Hot Topics in Marine Conservation The oceans are big, the problems facing it are even bigger, and yet many people don't know, don't care, or don't understand what's happening. This class explores some of the major threats affecting the oceans today. Take marine science to a new level by exploring the challenging issues facing conservationists, scientists and citizens alike. Prerequisite: Marine Biology or CIMI experience. 1 Class Period. |
